What You Need to Know Before Getting A Chest X-Ray

Chest x-rays are radiographic studies used for diagnosing unusual masses within the lungs. If a mass or other abnormality is discovered in the chest x-ray, your doctor may suggest a lung biopsy to make an official diagnosis.

Although chest x-rays are effective in detecting abnormalities within the lungs, healthcare professionals have found that the CT Scan is more effective in early detection of many lung diseases.

Chest x-rays serve many purposes:

  • To track tumor shrinkage
  • To determine extent of disease
  • To detect secondary conditions caused by tumor growth
  • To evaluate the lungs, chest cavity and chest wall for the presence of any abnormalities
  • To evaluate the size of the heart
  • To determine the size and location of any abnormalities prior to performing a biopsy
  • To screen for lung disease
