How A Chest X-Ray is Performed

A chest x-ray is performed in a hospital radiology department or in the health care provider's office by a certified x-ray technician. You will be asked to stand in front of the machine during the chest x-ray, take a deep breath and hold it, and stand still until the x-ray is taken. Depending on the problem, many different angles may be x-rayed.

Chest x-rays may take 15 minutes or longer depending on how many different angles your doctor has ordered.

Chest x-rays are painless and emit very small levels of radiation.
