As we grow older, we need more frequent healthcare, and for some, more oversight by others. In an effort to remain independent, many seniors look for assistance that will provide a sense of security. One option seniors and children of elderly parents turn to is a buddy system / telephone assurance program.

What is a Buddy?

A buddy is a friend, family member, neighbor, volunteer, caregiver, or trained individual that an elderly person trusts and can depend on for assistance.

What is a Buddy System / Telephone Reassurance Program?

A buddy system / telephone reassurance program is a service offered to seniors that makes daily telephone calls to the elderly person's home to ensure they are alright.

How Does the Buddy System / Telephone Reassurance Program Work?

The "buddy" calls the elderly person on a regular basis. This can be a set time each day that is convenient for the "buddy" and the elderly person. If the "buddy" is unable to reach the elderly person by telephone, the "buddy" will contact emergency medical services and/or a person designated by the elderly person.

Why Use a Buddy System / Telephone Reassurance Program?

This program provides reassurance and support to seniors, and a sense of security in knowing that someone will check on their safety and well being each day.

The buddy can serve as a friendly voice who cares and is there to listen, and can provide a type of companionship that the elderly person may depend on to hear from each day. This is especially helpful for seniors who may be feeling down or alone due to the recent death of a spouse.

How Can I Get The Buddy System / Telephone Reassurance Program?

Many medical alarm service providers offer this service for as little as $25 per month, however you may not need to pay for this service. Your community may have a telephone reassurance service that you can register for at no cost to you. Check with your local Meals on Wheels program or American Red Cross. If they do not offer this service, they may be able to direct you to the right person or organization offering the service.

If you find that the buddy system / telephone assurance program is not available locally and you can not afford to pay for the service, all is not lost. You can arrange for someone you know and trust to be your "buddy". Ask a family member, friend, neighbor, or landlord to call you each day at a time that is convenient for both of you.
