There are several types of collapsed lung (pneumothorax), however each type generally causes the same signs and symptoms. The following is a list of the signs and symptoms of collapsed lung:

  • Sharp pain in the chest
  • Sudden shortness of breath
  • Painful breathing
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Dry coughing
  • Cyanosis
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Tension Pneumothorax, another type of collapsed lung, also can cause the following signs and symptoms:

  • Distended neck veins
  • Low blood pressure or shock
  • Diagnostic Testing for Collapsed Lung

If your doctor suspects a collapsed lung, he or she will perform a complete physical examination, paying particular attention to your vital signs, appearance, and heart and breath sounds. Your doctor will listen for breath sounds in both lungs to determine if breath sounds are absent in either lung. Your doctor may also tap on your chest to listen for a hollow sound.

Confirming A Collapsed Lung is Present

After the physical examination, your doctor may order a chest x-ray to be performed. A chest x-ray is the most conclusive test for diagnosing a collapsed lung; however, sometimes a CT Scan may be needed if the collapsed lung is small or if lung disease is extensive.

Your doctor may also check the level of oxygen in your blood via a pulse oximeter or by performing an arterial blood gas analysis of your blood. In some cases, an EKG may be used to monitor the heart.
