Good eating habits and regular exercise are very important for maintaining health, and when diagnosed with a chronic lung disease, it's even more important. Dr. Imtiaz Ahmad, Special to the News-Press, wrote, "As a specialist in lung diseases, I am often amazed that many people are reluctant to believe that you can prevent - or better manage - many serious diseases through better lifestyle choices."

New Dietary Guidelines

In January 2005, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture released the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans to better help prevent obesity and reduce risks for major chronic diseases.

Are You At Risk for Lung Disease?

Often times, people wait until they have been diagnosed with a respiratory or cardiac disease before changing their lifestyle to include a healthy diet and regular exercise.

If you are overweight and/or smoke and have difficulty breathing, you may have a serious lung or heart disease. It's important to see your doctor and begin making lifestyle changes. It's not too late to improve your health. As News-Press indicates, "Physically fit people can better handle worsening of chronic lung conditions such as asthma, emphysema or chronic bronchitis as well as pneumonia and other acute conditions."
