Step 1 - Commit to Quit Smoking

Now that you’ve decided to quit smoking, commit to it – commit to quitting smoking right now. Don’t plan to do it “after this next cigarette” or after a future date or upcoming event, etc. Commit to quit smoking – now. Don’t even ponder thoughts of how difficult it will be. You already know it’s going to be difficult because you probably tried quitting before.

Notice that I said “tried quitting” smoking? There’s no “try” in quitting smoking. As I stated before, if you just “try” to quit smoking, you will fail. You must make up your mind that you are going to quit smoking, no matter what – no “ifs”, “ands”, and especially no “buts” (pun intended).

It is imperative to focus all of your attention on why you must quit smoking now. Therefore, every time a thought enters your brain about why you need a cigarette or why it is going to be difficult to stop smoking, immediately think about why you MUST quit smoking now or why smoking is a horrible habit.

Create Your Commit to Quit List

Create a “Commit to Quit” list by writing down all the reasons why you want to quit smoking. Think about your family, health, inconveniences, cost, the future, etc. Once you’ve finished, make several copies of your Commint to Quit smoking list. Post one in every room of your house where you can see it. Post one in your car and carry one with you at all times. (You may want to make a reduced sized copy to carry with you.) Add to your Commit to Quit smoking list as you think of more reasons.
