There are many chemotherapy drugs that cause mouth sores or mouth soreness. Although cleaning your mouth frequently is the first defense for mouth sores and mouth soreness, they may still develop.

Once mouth sores develop, eating can become very uncomfortable and challenging, to say the least. Instead of cringing at the thought of eating another bite, check the list below for foods that soothe mouth sores, and foods you should avoid because they will aggravate your mouth sores.

Foods That Soothe Mouth sores

  • Herbal teas
  • Puddings and custards
  • Cooked cereals, oatmeal
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Baby foods
  • Ice cream
  • Milkshakes
  • Bananas and applesauce
  • Cottage cheese
  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Fruit nectars
  • Pureed foods
  • Nutritional supplements
  • Foods to Avoid Foods That Aggravate Mouth Sores

  • Raw fruits and vegetables
  • Vinegar
  • Pickles
  • Chocolate
  • Salty or spicy foods
  • Citrus fruits and juices
  • Dry foods, such as chips and pretzels
  • Caffeine or alcoholic drinks
  • Your dietary intake is critical to your health and recovery from the chemotherapy. If your mouth sores become too painful to eat, see your doctor. It is important that you do not stop or eat less because of the pain of your mouth sores. Get help from your doctor before the mouth sores interrupt your daily food intake.
