If you’re suffering from a cough that you can’t seem to get rid of, you may have a chronic cough. Although a chronic cough is not always indicative of a serious condition, it does have an underlying cause that is treatable. However, in order to get rid of the cough, its cause must be determined so it can be treated properly.

Common Causes of Chronic Cough

  • Postnasal drip (Rhinorrhea)
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Asthma
  • Lung disease
  • Chronic Cough Caused by Postnasal Drip

Postnasal drip is a condition in which mucus drips down the back of the throat causing a cough. This generally occurs because of an overproduction of mucus in the airways. It is common for postnasal drip to be accompanied by a sore throat, and can sometimes lead to an ear infection or sinus infection. Postnasal drip tends to worsen when lying flat because of excessive mucus in the upper respiratory tract. Postnasal drip may be caused by hay fever, allergies, sinusitis, a cold, or the flu.

    Chronic Cough Caused by GERD

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition that causes the stomach acids to move up into the esophagus causing a cough. This reflux type movement occurs because the muscles of the esophagus fail to work properly. Although GERD most often causes heartburn and belching, coughing has also been associated with GERD.

Mild cases of GERD can usually be treated with simple lifestyle changes; however, moderate to severe cases of GERD may require drug treatment or surgery. (Read more about GERD treatment)

    Chronic Cough Caused by Asthma

Asthma causes bronchoconstriction and inflammation of the airways, which commonly triggers a cough. Coughing associated with asthma tends to worsen at night, during exercise and when exposed to respiratory irritants, such as chemicals. When properly treated, asthma can be controlled and asthma attacks can be reduced or even eliminated.

Chronic Cough Caused by Lung Disease

There are many lung diseases that can cause chronic cough. Signs and symptoms accompanied by the chronic cough will give your doctor some indication as to which lung disease may be ailing you. Further testing and a close look at your medical and family history will help your doctor to make an accurate diagnosis. Use the Signs/Symptoms Quick Search to find out if your chronic cough may be due to a lung disease.

If you have a chronic cough, see your doctor for an accurate diagnosis so you can get the proper treatment.
